“It’s one thing to study political systems in a classroom; it’s another to stand in a place where decisions shaping our nation were made”
On November 20, 2024, the future policymakers of the Political Science Society embarked on a journey that promised more than just a change of scenery. The Society’s much-anticipated Lakbay Aral took them to The Mansion, a storied edifice that stands as a testament to the country’s political heritage.
Nestled amidst the rolling greenery of Baguio City, The Mansion served as the perfect classroom for first- and second-year Political Science students, blending history with the palpable excitement of young minds eager to learn. Under a crisp November sky, students gathered at the iconic wrought iron gates, which have witnessed decades of national decision-making.
The day began with a guided tour, where the students were introduced to the history of the building, constructed in 1908 as the official summer residence of the country’s presidents. While its grand façade and sprawling gardens hinted at colonial opulence, the discussions that unfolded within its walls brought the complexities of Philippine governance to life.
What set this Lakbay Aral apart was not just the rich history of The Mansion, but also the dynamic exchanges among students and mentors. Between awe-struck glances at the intricate woodwork and photos, the students connected the past with contemporary governance issues.
The day ended not just with photos and memories, but with a deeper appreciation of their chosen field. The Lakbay Aral at The Mansion was not just a trip, it was a reminder of the weight of public service and the opportunities that await these budding political scientists. They left with more than historical knowledge, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose, ready to build a future as solid and enduring as The Mansion itself.
