Championing Sustainable Science: UC Biology Joins Cordillera Genomics Consortium

by: Nicole Cayabyab, UC Biology Society

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — In a strategic move to boost the region’s scientific and technological capabilities, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Biology Program has officially joined a newly established regional research consortium. Representing UC, Mr. Miranda recently participated in the Opening Ceremony of the Balik Scientist Program, hosted by the Department of Biology and the Science Research Center of the University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio.

The initiative, spearheaded by DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Arun Decano, convened higher education institutions (HEIs) and key stakeholders across the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Centered on the theme, “Strengthening Genomics and Bioinformatics Capacity in the Cordillera: Opportunities for Research, Training and Public Health,” the program highlighted the critical role of advanced biological sciences in tackling contemporary public health challenges through data-driven decision-making and innovation.

The consortium’s mission is deeply intertwined with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), weaving global targets directly into its regional action plan. By aiming to improve public health research and disease surveillance through genomic applications, the initiative actively supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Specifically, it addresses Target 3.d, which focuses on strengthening the capacity of communities for early warning, risk reduction, and the management of health risks.

Furthermore, the collaborative framework champions SDG 4: Quality Education. By facilitating rigorous capacity-building, inter-institutional training, and knowledge exchange, the program fulfills Target 4.4 by equipping local students and educators with relevant, highly specialized technical skills for employment and entrepreneurship in the sciences.

Establishing a robust scientific infrastructure in the Cordillera also marks a significant step toward realizing SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The consortium directly addresses Target 9.5 by striving to enhance regional scientific research systems, upgrade technological capabilities, and substantially increase the local pool of research and development workers.

Underpinning all of these efforts is a strong commitment to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. By uniting academic institutions, government agencies, and diverse research stakeholders under a shared vision, the consortium exemplifies Target 17.6, which calls for enhanced regional cooperation and access to science, technology, and innovation.

As UC’s representative, Mr. Miranda will join the core workshop team, contributing to critical discussions and collaborative activities focused on advancing data science and bioinformatics research in the region. His participation reflects the university’s broader commitment to academic excellence and regional research partnerships.

The capacity-building initiatives and collaborative projects under the consortium are slated to run through October 2026. Through sustained training, shared resources, and active partnership-building over the next few years, the program aims to lay a solid foundation for future scientific research that will ultimately benefit both the Cordillera’s scientific community and the wider public.
