The College of Arts and Science (CAS) successfully concluded its โ€˜CASTalakayan Lecture Seriesโ€™ at the UC Auditorium on May 20, 2024, featuring a talk by Dr. Gregory H. Winger from the University of Cincinnati. The event drew a substantial audience, eager to gain a deeper understanding of US foreign policy and its implications for Asia and the Pacific.

Dr. Winger’s lecture focused on the evolving strategy of the United States in global relations, tracing its development from the post-Cold War era to the current Indo-Pacific strategy. He highlighted how the post-Cold War period saw the US foster international engagement through trade and development, recognizing economic ties as a means to strengthen foreign relations. Additionally, Dr. Winger underscored the distinct approaches of different US administrations, such as the Obama administrationโ€™s focus on economic competition and intellectual property issues. Central to his discussion was the 2022 Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims for a “free and open, connected, prosperous, secure, and resilient” region.

Addressing contemporary political issues, Dr. Winger emphasized the relevance of global relations in the current geopolitical landscape. He pointed out that the US now faces significant competition from China, a rising superpower. This rivalry, he noted, impacts countries like the Philippines, which maintains close ties with the US while dealing with territorial disputes with China. Dr. Winger also highlighted the potential shifts in US foreign policy depending on the outcomes of the upcoming presidential election, stressing how these changes could influence the Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Participants left the lecture with a richer understanding of global dynamics and the factors shaping international relations. Dr. Wingerโ€™s insights were particularly beneficial for students, helping them comprehend the interplay between economic situations, political leadership, and global strategies. The discussions encouraged students to stay informed about both national and international developments, fostering critical thinking about the future and the impact of power and politics on global progress.

The CASTalakayan Lecture Series is an experience reinforcing the importance of staying engaged with global affairs and understanding the complexities of international relations. The organizers are already looking forward to future events, aiming to continue providing valuable learning opportunities for students and the wider community.
