On July 13, 2024, members of the Political Science Society attended the Young Economist International Convention at De La Salle University. The event, themed โExploring the Spectrum of Economic Behaviors: Building Resilience in the Philippine Economy,โ brought together a diverse group of students, faculty, and experts.
The convention featured two prominent speakers. Mr. Diwa Guinigundo, the former Deputy Governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, addressed the detrimental impact of corruption on the Philippine economy. Drawing on examples from other Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, he emphasized that eradicating corruption could significantly boost economic progress. Following Mr. Guinigundo, Dr. Benjamin Radoc delivered an insightful talk on how individual behaviors influence economic choices.
After the keynote addresses, a panel discussion provided a platform for further exploration of economic issues. The panel included former Senator Bam Aquino, Ms. Zian Bonoan, Co-Director of Effective Altruism Philippines, Mr. Felix Tonog, Executive Director of the Philippines Council for NGO Certification, Inc., and Dr. Philip Arnold Tuaรฑo, Dean of Ateneo School of Government. The discussion engaged participants in a lively exchange of ideas, linking classroom theories to real-world experiences shared by the experts.
Students and faculty from various disciplines, including Political Science, Economics, and Legal Management, attended the event. Their active participation highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the discussions and underscored the importance of collaborative learning.
The convention concluded with Econexxion, a networking session where participants could delve deeper into various topics and forge potential partnerships for future projects and programs. This session fostered meaningful connections and provided a platform for ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
