UC CAS Hosts Cultural Exhange with Skyline College

Last ๐—๐˜‚๐—น๐˜† ๐Ÿด, ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฐ, the College of Arts and Sciences hosted an institutional exchange visit between the ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€ and ๐—ฆ๐—ธ๐˜†๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ, held at the ๐—จ๐—– ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ from ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ:๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ ๐—”๐—  – ๐Ÿฐ:๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ฃ๐— .

The event, entitled “๐™Ž๐™๐™–๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™จ, ๐™Ž๐™๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™ช๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š๐™จ”, welcomed the inaugural Skyline College ‘Study Abroad’ cohort to the Philippines, composed of 9 students and 1 community researcher, through a series of immersive presentations, discussions, and activities centered around the rediscovery of cultural roots and the Filipino identity. ๐——๐—ฟ. ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ข๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ, Acting President of Skyline College, led the group in search of personal growth and cultural immersion for the Filipino-American students from San Bruno, California.

The ๐—จ๐—– ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ began the cultural experience with a medley of Filipino Folk Dances from across the various regions of the country, showcasing the local colors and diversity from the lowlands to the Cordilleras.

Then, Skyline College’s ๐——๐—ฟ. ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฎ ๐—˜๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ (Language Arts Division Professor) and ๐——๐—ฟ. ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น (Ethnic Studies Professor) lectured on the “๐‘ƒ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐ป๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐ธ๐‘‘๐‘ข๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘–๐‘› ๐ด๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ž”, the “๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜Œ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด”, and the “๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜š๐˜ฌ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ’๐˜ด ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜บ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ”. They highlighted the stories of the Filipino diaspora as well as the shared experiences of their students, hailing from various higher education institutions in the California area, particularly the ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ – ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€, the ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ผ, and ๐—ฆ๐—ธy๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ.

This was followed by a lunch break, with food and services provided by the ๐—จ๐—– ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—บ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, focused on serving traditional cuisine for a true sense of a Filipino “salo-salo”.

At the resumption of the institutional exchange, the Skyline delegates were escorted to ๐—จ๐—– ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿด for the ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ธ๐˜€ portion of the event, where the visiting students and professors were able to sit in on ๐—”๐˜๐˜๐˜†. ๐—๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—”๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ผ’s class on ๐˜—๐˜š 110๐˜• – ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต & ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ด.

Afterwards, a simulated Dap-ay session was conducted back at the UC Theater, involving the Skyline cohort and the selected UC student representatives in an open question-and-answer discussion on the topic “๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข: ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ. Moderated” by ๐— ๐˜€. ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ด, UC-CAS Social Sciences Department instructor, the activity sought to cultivate an environment full of a willingness to share and partake in the celebration of heritage, the breaking of barriers, and the rediscovery of the Filipino culture through a diasporan lens.

Finally, the event concluded in a workshop facilitated by the ๐—จ๐—– ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ (๐—–๐—–๐—ฃ). Under the guidance of ๐— ๐—ฟ. ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ท๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—–. ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ, the Director of the CCP, the Skyline cohort was encouraged to play the traditional Cordilleran gongs and to partake in the community dance as the culmination of cultural immersion.
