Third-year interns of BA English Language Studies (ELS), together with Mr. Jessie B. Martinez, recently started a partnership on reading literacy program under the ๐๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฑ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ of the College of Arts and Sciences, a program aimed at helping junior high students improve their English reading skills. The project took place at Dominican-Mirador National High School and focused on building comprehension, vocabulary, and reading confidence in the English language.
This program was a heartfelt response to the needs of Grade 7 and Grade 8 students who required additional support in reading comprehension. The program focused on deepening their ability to understand and engage with texts meaningfully, with the goal of guiding them toward independent reading, particularly in comprehension.

๐๐ฌ. ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐. ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฒ๐จ, coordinator for the National Reading Program, expressed that the partnership with UC came at the perfect time, aligning with the Department of Educationโs (DepEd) MATATAG Curriculum and DepEd Order No. 010, s. 2024, which highlights the importance of literacy and numeracy programs in fostering functional literacy among Filipino learners.
This effort reflects the BA ELS internsโ commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning. By transforming classroom knowledge into meaningful community work, the experience has opened new paths for their growth and strengthened their role in supporting the educational journey of young learners.

On August 11, a report on the activity was presented and discussed with the school head, ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง ๐. ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐จ and Ms. Laduyo, highlighting observations and insights from the students involved and on how they can further improve the program. The program concluded with a simple awarding of certificate to Dominican-Mirador National High School as a gesture of appreciation for their support, followed by a photo opportunity with school representatives and BA ELS interns. The day ended with optimism for more partnerships in the future and a vision of collaborations that will continue to inspire positive change in literacy development.
