The UC Political Science Society held its first general assembly for the first term of A.Y. 2023-2024 on October 25, 2023, at the UC Auditorium.
The event commenced with welcome remarks from Mr. John Rey R. Dayucos, who conveyed his regards to our Political Science students. Following this, an uplifting performance of ‘Liwanag sa Dilim’ was delivered by Sunshine Cabugao, Zamantha Bello, Jasmine Calisaan, and Jhomel Nuezca.
Baguio City Councilor Isabelo B. Cosalan, Jr., representing Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, graced the event and emphasized the theme, “Harmonizing Good Governance for Indigenous Peoples’ Rights: A Path to Inclusive Progress.” He briefly explained the importance of harmonizing the IPRA law with other mainstream laws to protect the lands owned by Indigenous Peoples. He also highlighted the notion that the youth are the leaders due to their progressive voice regarding inclusivity and the protection of Indigenous Peoples. He emphasized that through dialogue, common ground can be identified.
Meanwhile, the introduction of the Political Science faculty members was led by Mrs. Brenda Cruz Martinez, the Program Chair of the UC Political Science Department. Following this, the oath-taking of the new elective and appointive officers of the UC Political Science Society, inducted by the PSS adviser, Mr. Arnold Lozano, took place. The executive committee of the Political Science Society for this academic year will be administered by the newly-elected President, James Cod-amon Manwong, and Vice President, Sunshine Cabugao.
To elaborate on and discuss the society’s initiatives in an inclusive manner, students were given the opportunity to engage and share their thoughts on the presented resolutions. All recommendations and feedback were duly noted by the PSS executive committee, assuring the students that they would be reviewed and applied for the betterment of the student body.
Among the resolutions deliberated during the general assembly were those related to the organizational fee of the Political Science Society, Tagisan ng Talino, Lakbay Aral, and the writing workshop.
